Wie de schilderijen van Albert Pol (*1942) bekijkt, treedt een bijzondere wereld binnen, vol menselijke emoties.
Confrontaties van het goede en kwade in en tussen mensen nemen een belangrijke plaats in. De uitdrukking van mensen staat centraal en is afwisselend wrang, schrijnend, deerniswekkend, geraffineerd, ontroerend en eenvoudig.
Pol hield zich niet aan één stijl. Eigenlijk was hij niet met vorm of stijl bezig, maar met het vele dat leefde in zijn eigenlijk geheime binnenwereld. Als toch op de vorm gelet wordt dan kunnen elementen met invloeden van Breughel, Ensor of Rembrandt genoemd worden. Warme, min of meer Rembrandteske kleuren voeren de boventoon.
Hij gebruikt steeds olieverf en brengt die met karton van pakken kattenvoer op het doek. De meeste schilderijen zijn groot: tussen 100 en 150 cm. lang en tussen 70 en 100 cm. breed.
De laatste jaren maken zijn doeken vaker een rustiger en minder heftige indruk.
Pol is opgegroeid in een Eindhovense volksbuurt, en werd daar opgeleid tot onderwijzer. Jarenlang is hij in een Amsterdamse volksbuurt onderwijzer geweest. Sinds 1970 woont hij in Enkhuizen.
Hij is een echte familieman, en voelt zich thuis het meest op zijn gemak met zijn zoons, zijn Canadese vrouw Lana, en/of zijn katten om zich heen. |
Whoever sees Ab Pol’s ( *1942) paintings enters a really special world – a world radiating people’s emotions.
Direct confrontations with the good and the bad in and among people plays a dominate role. People’s expressions form the central point – radiating cynicism, irony, compassion, cunning, touchiness and simplicity.
Pol was never bounded by one style. Actually he was never concerned with a form or a style but more with what lived in the depth of his conscience. If one is interested in the style than one may see Breughel, Ensor or Rembrandt. More or less the colours from Rembrandt set the pace. He continues to use oil paint and, unbelievably, paints with pieces of cardboard coming from boxes containing cat food. Most of the paintings are rather large – between 100 and 150 cm high and 70 to 100 cm wide.
The newest painting are somewhat softer than the direct confronting style of the earlier paintings. Only somewhat!
Pol grew up in a working class quarter in Eindhoven and studied there to be a teacher. His teaching career was spent in a working class quarter school in Amsterdam. He his lived in Enkhuizen since 1970. Since then he has had many exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad. Pol is the prime example of a real family man. Therefore he is the most at home with his two sons and his Canadian wife. And not to be forgotten his five cats surrounding him. |
